Me? I’m a bit (snicker) undisciplined, and tend to play by ear – which I’m not half-bad at (and, by definition, not half-good at, either). Roundabout the early eighties, I inherited my brother’s Les Paul knockoff, learned some chords, fumbled through some solos, learned how to multitrack, and played with the Bowheads, who opened for the Judys, thank you very much.

Moved to Austin, played once on Sixth Street, which I don’t really want to talk about. Worked for student radio and for SXSW. Spent a summer in Italy accompanying my cousin Ursulla — one of the finest singers on the planet. Moved to Durango and played in a band called Charlotte’s Garden, and in the school jazz band. Married my amazing wife, finally graduated. Left town. Moved to Fort Worth, and for many years was musically idling.

Then Danny asked if I wanted to come jam with he and John. There followed many months off re-learning how to play bass, and some (to me) embarrassingly mediocre playing from me. Buuuuuut, as we discovered our inner jazz hepcats, or perhaps let them become our outer jazz hepcats, some good-if-not-pretty-damn-good-if-I-do-say-so-myself stuff started to happen. I’m still a charlatan and a faker, though, sitting next to two really good players. But they tolerate me as I’m easy going, and bass players are hard to come by.

Despite being the weakest leg of the trio, I wouldn’t give it up for anything. Playing next to Danny, a showstopper and a crowd-pleaser. And Johnny. a complete and utter madman. Seriously — watch his feet when we play! It’s like the happiest dog in the world wagging his tail. Easily, far-and-away, the best musical gig I’ve ever had. Twisting and re-shaping the most beautiful music ever written with two great men and phenomenal musicians is just about as good as it gets, musically.

I’ve said more than enough about me. It’s all about the music. Come and have a listen!
